Mike Matheson's start to the season may have just extended his stay with the Montreal Canadiens.

The 31-year-old veteran is simply indispensable on the Canadiens' blue line, especially with Kaiden Guhle sidelined once again due to injury, and many experts agree that resolving this situation is now a priority for Kent Hughes.
Because if the Canadiens' general manager waits too long, he risks seeing the veteran defenseman leave Montreal and test the free-agent market on July 1.

Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens will lose Mike Matheson if he reaches June without an extension, according to Renaud Lavoie

That's what Renaud Lavoie stated during a recent segment on BPM Sports
"If you wait until June to sign Mike Matheson, good luck... he's gone."

- Renaud Lavoie
His point being that with the kind of start Mike Matheson is having, he could cash in on the free-agent market next summer, as some teams will certainly offer him at least 7 million dollars per year.
Right now, Matheson earns 4.5 million dollars, which is a real bargain considering his importance to the Canadiens since the beginning of the season.
Even though discussions between Kent Hughes and Mike Matheson's camp haven't started yet, it's a safe bet that this will be one of the Canadiens' hottest files in the months ahead.
