Steve Yzerman has just completed the worst trade of his career
The Detroit Red Wings' general manager, Steve Yzerman, has just completed the worst trade of his career, according to three journalists.
The highly respected GM made a "panic" trade with the San Jose Sharks, giving away a second-round pick and defenseman
Jake Walman for nothing.
"Although he is considered one of the best GMs in the league and usually makes very good decisions, he has likely just made his worst transaction by sending defenseman
Jake Walman and a second-round pick to San Jose in return for future considerations."
- Samuel Doiron
Steve Yzerman already deeply regrets the Jake Walman trade
But why did he make this trade?
Because he believed he was about to acquire defenseman
Jacob Trouba from the New York Rangers and needed to quickly free up cap space.
This resembles the
Sean Monahan trade between the Montreal Canadiens and the Calgary Flames in 2022 (at that time, the Flames wanted forward
Nazem Kadri).
However, the Trouba trade to Detroit ultimately failed, and the Red Wings ended up signing
Erik Gustafsson to replace Walman. Ouch.
It's worth noting that Jake Walman was a fan favorite, playing 20 minutes per game, being very reliable defensively, and very robust.
He fully deserves his $3.4 million per year salary for two more seasons.
Walman isn't on the same level as
David Savard, but their styles are comparable.
More details will follow.
