Kent Hughes makes a big decision on a contract buyout
Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton's end-of-season review provided plenty of information. One piece of information was the duo's intentions regarding a possible contract buyout during the next offseason.
Several experts discussed a potential buyout this summer, but Kent Hughes has resolved the matter.
When asked about this, the GM indeed had no hesitation in his response. He definitely does not intend to use this method in the coming weeks.
Therefore, unless there's a surprise trade, expect Josh Anderson and Brendan Gallagher to be on the team's roster next October. These players have often been mentioned in recent months in buyout speculations.
As of today, according to the site
Capfriendly, the CH will have over $8M free when summer arrives, with only
Jesse Ylonen,
Arber Xhekaj, and
Justin Barron to sign who will be restricted free agents. Adding the Price contract that could still go on the LTIR, the Habs will have more than $18M free.
The club therefore does not have a short-term need for cap space. Compromising its payroll for future years, years when the CH will indeed need space, would indeed be an unnecessary and very harmful move.
Kent Hughes mentioned on Wednesday morning, this summer will be important, but not as much as the next summer! He will therefore not start creating obstacles in the lead-up to this important offseason 2025.
«This summer will be the most important since I got here, but I believe next summer will be even more important.» - Kent Hughes
