If it's certain that Samuel Montembeault will be the Canadiens' number-one goaltender this year, nothing is set yet regarding his backup.

Jakub Dobes was by far superior to Kaapo Kahkonen during training camp, but the veteran of 140 NHL games has one advantage: he must clear waivers if the Habs' management sends him down.
We also can't forget that the organization invited Blainville native Kevin Mandolese to camp on a professional tryout. He was assigned to the Laval Rocket and still seems to be waiting for a proper contract.
It's a safe bet that everything will depend on what happens with Dobes and Kahkonen in the coming days. If the Canadiens lose one, they'll have Mandolese as an insurance policy in Laval.

A journalist suggests the Canadiens could trade a goalie like Jakub Dobes or Jacob Fowler for a center

Speaking of goalies, journalist Andrew Zadarnowski from HEOTP floated an idea this weekend that raised more than a few eyebrows.
According to him, Jakub Dobes or Jacob Fowler could be traded in exchange for the long-sought second-line center.
"Kevin Mandolese remains within the Canadiens sphere, headed to Laval. Makes me wonder if Dobes or even Fowler are in play for a potential trade for a 2C."

In my opinion, if Zadarnowski's prediction comes true, it will be Dobes who leaves and not Fowler.
The rookie is far too important for the club's future, as he's projected to be the next number-one goalie of the Canadiens to succeed Samuel Montembeault.
On the other hand, Fowler carries much more value than Dobes, which means the return would be even better.
I'm very curious to see what Kent Hughes, Jeff Gorton, and Martin St-Louis will decide regarding the goaltenders.
