With everything that happened on the NHL trade market, we didn't have time to properly revisit the Canadiens' 2025 draft.

With that in mind, we wanted to go back and look at Kent Hughes' acquisition of young L.J. Mooney.
Just weeks after the draft, he's already being labeled by experts as one of its biggest steals.
He's a prospect generating growing excitement, and Rob Ramage even dared to compare him to a certain Lane Hutson - but on offense.

Montreal Canadiens' Acquisition of L.J. Mooney: A Daylight Robbery According to Several Experts

Let's just say his performance at the Canadiens' most recent development camp turned a lot of heads.
An interesting fact about John Mooney: he is actually the cousin of star forward Logan Cooley, who plays for the Utah Mammoth and racked up 65 points in 75 games this season.
L.J. Mooney, 18 years old, is a right-handed centerman standing 5-foot-7 and weighing 162 pounds. He was selected in the fourth round by the Montreal Canadiens this past June (113th overall).
He recorded 28 points in 26 games in 2024-2025 with the U.S. National Development Team (USNDT).
According to many, he was the best player on that team.
This is definitely a name to watch in the coming years!
From what I've seen and heard, if he were 5-foot-10 or 5-foot-11, he likely would've been a solid first-round pick.
