Since being hired as general manager of the Montreal Canadiens, Kent Hughes has gotten us used to pulling off major trades right in the middle of August.

Every August since his hiring, Hughes has completed a big trade. Notably, on August 19 of last year, the Canadiens made a trade with the Columbus Blue Jackets to acquire the big forward Patrik Laine.
Many experts are now wondering.. What will be Kent Hughes' big trade for August 2025?
And that's when the name Mike Matheson keeps coming up more and more, as he represents an excellent value on the trade market for Kent Hughes.
His value would indeed be very interesting, and he could even allow the team to get their hands on the long-awaited second-line center in Montreal.
That said, as Marco Normandin reported in the past few hours, it will all come down to the price.

Trading Mike Matheson for a draft pick? Vincent Damphousse weighs in

The former star forward of the Canadiens is unequivocal.
Vincent Damphousse believes the Habs still need Mike Matheson, and he wouldn't trade him for a draft pick.
"Mike Matheson for me, you don't trade him for a draft pick.

He's been a #1 and #2 defenseman here and he's already signed to an outstanding contract under 5 million.

You can't just give him away for a second-round pick."

- Vincent Damphousse

And I agree with him 100%.
No, Mike Matheson won't have as big a role with the Canadiens (compared to the 2023-24 season), following the arrival of players like Lane Hutson and, more recently, Noah Dobson, but he will still remain an important piece of Martin St-Louis' lineup.
According to a recent report from Blain Potvin of the Hockey Writers, the Utah Mammoth, the New York Rangers, and the Edmonton Oilers are all seriously interested in acquiring Matheson (especially the Oilers), but caution is needed before sending him off too quickly, even after the acquisition of Noah Dobson.
He is a player who is appreciated here, he is an excellent defenseman, and it's no coincidence that a team like the Edmonton Oilers is extremely interested in acquiring him.
