The former Montreal Canadiens forward, Alex Kovalev, has indeed admitted that he had an off-ice problem that nearly destroyed his career.

Video game addiction problems clearly aren't new, and no, Patrik Laine isn't the only player who nearly ruined his career in the National Hockey League because of video games.
Laine had to consult specialists, and by his own admission, it really helped him!
He can truly be proud of himself!
Patrik Laine, Olli Juolevi, Josh Ho-Sang, and Jakub Zboril are not the only ones to experience such a problem.
That said, let's return to our original premise.

Video game addiction problems aren't new for NHL players: Alex Kovalev shares his story

You read that right.
"There's another player, long before them, who also had his share of problems with video games: None other than Alex Kovalev.

In a recent interview with a media outlet from his home country, he opened up about the hell he went through.. caused by the Super Nintendo!"

- Marco Normandin, HABSolumentFan

Here's the essence of what he said on the subject, as reported by HF.
"When I got to the NHL, I was a maniac!

I had a Super Nintendo with tons of game cartridges that I was constantly swapping out.

I had, and I'm not even joking, about 35 or 40 game cartridges scattered on my floor.

When I woke up in the morning, I ate breakfast while playing.

Sometimes, I arrived late to practice because I wanted to finish a level.

After practices, I'd play for another 5 or 6 hours, eat, then play again late into the night.

It was really awful.

It ended up affecting my performance on the ice."

- Alex Kovalev, who adds that he slept very little and constantly forgot things he was supposed to do on the ice because of it.

It truly affected his performance on the ice.
"I realized that even when I was sitting on the bench during a game, sometimes I was thinking about my games at home and not about the ongoing match."

- Alex Kovalev

He later solved the problem himself, unplugged everything, and his career took off quite impressively!
