Several interesting topics were recently addressed by Kent Hughes. One of them was certainly his explanations regarding his plans up to the trade deadline, including with his veteran Sean Monahan.
While many want the veteran to leave the organization at a high price by next March 8th, others would like him to extend his association with the club.
On this subject, the General Manager was quite evasive in his plans with his veteran...
Could Sean Monahan extend his contract in Montreal before the trade deadline?
"Anything is possible," admits Kent Hughes!
The options are therefore on the table and we can understand that Monahan will only leave if an irresistible offer arises.
Regarding this offer, David Pagnotta from the website TheFourthPeriod recently let slip the current value of the veteran on the trade market. Here is what Kent Hughes would be asking:
"Monahan's price (35 points in 49 games, $1.985 million per season) is a first-round pick or a second-round pick with a prospect." David Pagnotta
Wow!
We must not forget here that the Canadiens already got a big gift simply by acquiring Monahan.
As we mentioned recently, the first-round pick given by the Flames for the Canadiens to take Monahan's contract could yield big, very big.
If the stars align, this pick could allow the Canadiens to draft 2nd overall in 2025 or even 1st in 2026.
Thus, the Canadiens could end up with two first-round picks in the end for Monahan. Wow! (and possibly a prospect)
Knowing that a first-round pick is already in the bag, and that it could yield big, Kent Hughes may prefer to extend the contract. Especially if the veteran is open to staying in town...
A file to follow!
