Regarding Patrik Laine's trade request, the news we've been waiting for has just dropped for Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens.
As we mentioned earlier today, Patrik Laine has indeed requested a trade from the Columbus Blue Jackets, and their general manager has confirmed that he should be traded before the start of the next season.
However, what delayed the trade involving Patrik Laine, as mentioned by GM Don Waddell, was the fact that the Finnish forward was still in the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program.
Everyone was therefore waiting for his release, including Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton.
And here it is.
The much-anticipated news has just dropped: Patrik Laine has just left the Assistance Program and can now be officially traded
So, expect a transaction involving him to be announced sooner rather than later.
«Good news for Patrik Laine: he is authorized to leave the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program. Glad to see he is doing better.
Laine is still recovering from shoulder surgery. As for his future in the NHL, teams interested in acquiring him have been informed that they are free to contact Laine.
This is the next step before he and the Blue Jackets decide how to proceed.»
- Elliotte Friedman, Sportsnet
We are happy to see that he is doing better!
«No trade was possible as long as Laine was in the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program, which he joined last January. He left it on Friday, which could now speed things up.» - TVA Sports
Let's not forget that the Montreal Canadiens, who are openly looking for a top-6 forward, are among the favorites to acquire Laine.
Montreal's management can now talk to Laine, which is obviously a major development.
In fact, Kent Hughes is one of the few NHL GMs who can afford to acquire Patrik Laine.
This is a very big story to watch in the coming hours!
Details to follow.
