Gary Bettman finally addresses his favouritism for American teams
In connection with the favoritism accusations made by several in his direction, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman has just broken the silence.
This is a serious issue, and Bettman wanted to respond.
In the last few hours, he took a moment to respond to those accusing him of favoritism, particularly regarding the more than 30-year drought for Canadian teams without a Stanley Cup.
In an interview with TSN, Bettman was confronted with the fact that many accuse him of favoring American markets and their teams to the detriment of Canadian teams.
Favoritism: Gary Bettman responds to the accusations
Here's what he said.
«First, let's mention that this is a first victory (in the Stanley Cup final) for the Panthers, since they have never won the Cup.
In my initial year as commissioner, the Montreal Canadiens won the Cup, and, you know, there are theories they are false saying that we have something to do with that. We are truly a league of several countries. We have clubs in the United States and Canada, and I do not see this as a two-league system.»
«I understand the passion for this sport in Canada. It's exceptional, but in the end, it's up to the teams to decide what happens on the ice, and I don't believe their country of origin has anything to do with it.» - Gary Bettman
Did his response convince you?
In any case, even today, following the Florida Panthers' victory yesterday, many still point the finger at Bettman.
«Gary Bettman fell asleep like a child last night. His Cup remained in an American market. The rest...» - Réjean Tremblay
And you, do you believe it's mere coincidence that Canadian teams haven't won since Gary Bettman's arrival?
Do you believe he was secretly happy to see the Panthers win?
