In the last few seconds, the Pittsburgh Penguins have announced the signing of their young defenseman Ty Smith.

Smith, 23, is a 5 foot 11 inch, 180 pound defenseman.

He was drafted 17th overall in 2018 by the New Jersey Devils, but was traded to Pittsburgh last summer (along with a 3rd round pick) for defenseman John Marino.

Smith gathered 24 points (7 goals) in 39 games last season with the Penguins' farm club, and 4 points in 9 NHL games.

"The Penguins have signed a one-year contract with defenseman Ty Smith.

The contract spans the 2023.24 season, carrying an average annual value of $775,000."

So it's a single season contract, valued at $775,000.

Another young player who has to settle for a discount contract due to a very tight salary cap, another young player betting on himself with a one-year deal.

It's reminiscent of Filip Zadina.

Details to follow.
