Montreal Canadiens fans are very familiar with the name Shane Wright. The young forward, whom many expected to be selected first overall in 2022, was ultimately passed over by Kent Hughes and his team.
However, we've just learned something big.
A Canadiens Executive Slipped Up About a Potential Shane Wright Acquisition in Montreal, and Marco D'Amico Explains the Story
It's a really fascinating story.
D'Amico, who was behind the Canadiens' scoop of the year (the signing and arrival of
Ivan Demidov at the end of the season), just revealed the following:
"Marco D'Amico tells us the story of how a high ranking person in Habs management told him Shane Wright was going to be the pick in 2022"
- HFTV
So the Canadiens seriously considered drafting Shane Wright in 2022.. So much so that a top executive in Montreal's front office believed Wright was the guy! Wow!
"Sometimes you get information that doesn't pan out.
In 2022, I was told-by a high-ranking member of the Montreal Canadiens' management-that Shane Wright was their pick.
We all know that didn't end up happening."
- Marco D'Amico
Really interesting stuff!
At this point, it's still hard to say what the right choice was.
Shane Wright, a center, has 51 points in 95 career NHL games, after recording 44 points in 79 games this season on a third line.
Juraj Slafkovsky, a winger, has 111 points in 200 career NHL games, after posting 51 points in 79 games this season on the top line.
And in your opinion, what was the right choice for the Montreal Canadiens with the 1st overall pick in 2022?
