We will get back to you with the details, but we know that the number of years was very important, and signing him for "only" five seasons is excellent for Kent Hughes and the Canadiens.
Please note that the excellent Marco D'Amico has the same information. It's solid.
"The Canadiens and Mike Matheson have made progress on extension talks of late.
Could come to a head earlier today. Heard the term was between 4-5 years.

Matheson, 31, is currently on an expiring deal that pays him $4.875 million per year. He was set to become an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2026, but it now seems that won't happen, he's in Montreal to stay!
UPDATE
The deal is now officially locked in.
Matheson has signed a five-year extension with the Habs at an average of $6 million per year. That means he's not going anywhere anytime soon!
He could've easily gotten much more on the open market, but he chose to stay home!
More details to come.
