TVA Sports journalist Renaud Lavoie has just revealed an interesting piece of information involving forward Jonathan Marchessault and the Montreal Canadiens.

Basically, if Kent Hughes and the Habs had wanted him, Marchessault would be a Canadiens player today.

Jonathan Marchessault really could have become a Montreal Canadiens player

Charles-Alexis Brisebois also talked about it in a recent article:
"On this topic, it is interesting to mention that Renaud Lavoie, who is well connected in the hockey world, actually discussed the subject of Jonathan Marchessault in his column yesterday with Jean-Charles Lajoie.

What did he say?

The Canadiens could have acquired the Quebec forward if the club had wanted to.

But with more than three years remaining at $5.5M per year, and with the Preds refusing to retain any salary, the answer is no."

And I completely understand Kent Hughes, because I would also refuse to pay such a price (in terms of salary cap) to bring Jonathan Marchessault to town.
In short, this will be a situation to keep an eye on. Especially with the Predators' rough start - they could become sellers well before the deadline - but for now, Kent Hughes refuses to take on Jonathan Marchessault at $5.5 million per year until 2029.
Could that change if the Predators agree to retain some salary? To be continued.
Marchessault, 34 years old, is a 5-foot-9, 185-pound winger who has accumulated over 500 career NHL points (more than 250 goals as well).
Also, as reported in the last few days, two other veterans could be heading out of Nashville due to their early-season struggles: Ryan O'Reilly and Steven Stamkos, and both of them have previously been linked to the Canadiens.
