Kovalev breaks silence on addiction that nearly destroyed his career
Here is an interesting statement involving a very popular former player of the Montreal Canadiens.
Alex Kovalev has always been a favorite among CH fans, having notably had an 84-point season in 82 games in 2007-2008. He was extremely talented with a puck on his stick, and he has always been very generous with his time.
Why are we talking about Alex Kovalev today?
Because Kovalev has just opened up, in an interview with the site "The Caviar Diplomat," and he confided that he had a serious addiction to video games, specifically to the Super Nintendo.
Kovalev admits that he loved the Super Nintendo, that he always had between 35 and 40 games with him, often right on his floor, and that it definitely had an impact on his career in the NHL.
"When I got up in the morning, I would have breakfast while playing a game. Sometimes, I arrived late to practice just to finish a level. After practice, I played again for 5-6 hours, I ate and played again later." - Alex Kovalev
Given that he also played until the early hours of the morning, it had a big impact on his energy as well as his sleep.
Video game addiction: Alex Kovalev breaks the silence
He continues.
"It was really bad for me. I had reached a point where it affected my game. I wasn't sleeping, I was forgetting things I had to do on the ice. It was almost like you weren't there mentally at all and you couldn't remember what you normally do." - Alex Kovalev
He even thought about it during games:
"At first, I thought it was just fatigue and that I needed to sleep more. Then, I realized that on the bench I sometimes thought about the hockey game, rather than the actual game. That's when I realized it wasn't going in the right direction." - Alex Kovalev
He finally chose to take control, to take matters into his own hands and fight this addiction.
From one day to the next, he unplugged everything and never played video games again until the birth of his two young boys.
Kudos to Alex Kovalev for his courage, and all the better if it can help other players take control as well.
