The Montreal Canadiens just got a big boost at the end of this season and in the race for the 2025 NHL playoffs.
Thanks to the Vancouver Canucks, Patrick Roy's Islanders were defeated (in regulation, no less) by a score of 5-2 last night.
This is fantastic news for the Canadiens, since the Islanders had a chance to surpass Montreal in the Eastern conference standings.
But they blew that chance.
A loss for Patrick Roy's squad that pays off big for the Montreal Canadiens in the standings
There were plenty of reactions saying as much.
A Canadiens win tonight would be huge for their hopes of making the playoffs this season.
"A regulation loss by the Islanders to the Canucks keeps the Canadiens in the second wild card spot, with a game in hand on them and two on the Rangers - both teams sitting one point behind."
Eric Engels
The Canadiens must win tonight!
The Eastern standings are tightening: Martin St-Louis' squad well-positioned
Here's the current picture:
Ottawa (in playoffs) - 79 points in 70 games
Montreal (in playoffs) - 75 points in 70 games
Islanders (out of playoffs) - 74 points in 71 games
Rangers (out of playoffs) - 74 points in 72 games
Columbus (out of playoffs) - 73 points in 70 games
Detroit (out of playoffs) - 72 points in 71 games
Yes, this gives hope - and yes, it's a big sigh of relief over here.
