Trade officially completed between the Canadiens and the Oilers following yesterday's game

As we told you at the very beginning of the series between the Edmonton Oilers and the Colorado Avalanche, the outcome of this confrontation would have a direct impact on the Montreal Canadiens organization.

That's now settled.

With the 2022 NHL Draft just one month away, Kent Hughes and the Tricolore's management have officially "got their hands" on a new second round pick.

How did they do it? It's thanks to the transaction that brought Brett Kulak from the CH to the Oilers last March, for: defenseman William Lagesson, a conditional 2nd round pick in 2022 and a 7th round pick in 2024.

The conditional pick here was contingent on the Oilers making the playoffs.

If Edmonton made it to the Stanley Cup final, Kent Hughes and the CH would receive a 2023 2nd round pick, if not, a 2022 2nd round pick.

Remember that this famous second round pick, the one of the Oilers in 2022, did not yet officially belong to Montreal because, if Edmonton eliminated Colorado (and went to the Cup Final), this famous selection would go to the Chicago Blackhawks, due to the Duncan Keith trade.

If Edmonton made it to the Stanley Cup Final, the Hawks would receive a 2022 2nd round pick, if not, a 2022 3rd round pick.

And they had priority over the Habs.

In summary, given that Edmonton was eliminated yesterday:

- Montreal receives the Oilers' 2nd round 2022 pick (64th overall)
- Chicago receives the Oilers' 2022 3rd round pick

We also know that this will indeed be the 64th overall pick in the upcoming draft, which will take place at the Bell Centre.

"With the Oilers eliminated from the playoffs, the 3rd pick in 2022 sent to Chicago in the Keith trade will NOT become a 2nd pick in 2022. Montreal #GoHabsGo will receive the Oilers 2022 2nd pick." - CapFriendly
