Out since the start of the season, defenseman Joel Edmundson is expected to return to play very soon.

He has been training with his teammates on a regular basis for a few days and, the descriptor of Habs games on 98.5 FM, Martin McGuire, said that Edmundson will have an important role within the team in the coming weeks.

«When Ben Chiarot is gone, which should be quite imminent, Joel Edmundson is going to be very important. I can tell you that in the organization, we want to keep him because we want to put the young defenders of the team in good hands and with him, they will be in good hands." -Martin McGuire

With the probable departure of Chiarot, and also that of Jeff Petry, Edmundson will be in a way the leader of the team on the blue line and there are even some experts who said that Eddy could become the team's next captain.

His experience will be very beneficial and he could serve as a mentor to the organization's young defenders in the near future, including Kaiden Guhle and Logan Mailloux, who could land in Montreal next season.

Edmundson still hasn't played a game this season due to a back injury and has two more seasons to play before his contract, which earns him $3.5 million annually, expires.
