Possible Alexis Lafrenière trade to the Montreal Canadiens? Interesting comments from Stéphane Leroux

It's a subject that hasn't been touched on until now, but that I love.

Is it realistic to hope to get Alexis Lafrenière via trade?

The well-known journalist Stéphane Leroux, from RDS, talks about it in his most recent column on RDS.ca.

Leroux asks himself exactly the following question today: «And if the Canadians trade for Alexis Lafrenière? »

Leroux had already asked himself this question in 2012.

On March 2, 2012, the RDS journalist suggested that Habs should trade the 1st round pick of the upcoming 2012 Draft (the 3rd overall) to the Florida Panthers, in return for Jonathan Huberdeau. The least we can say is that it would have been an incredible home run. (the result would have been: Alex Galchenyuk vs Huberdeau)

Back in 2022, 10 years later, Leroux adds to this and believes that the Hughes / Gorton duo must assess this possibility and try something.

«Most Habs fans dreamed of seeing the Canadiens win this lottery in 2020, but the surprise playoff victory against the Penguins during the summer season pushed the Canadiens back to 16th place."

So the next question is: is it realistic, would the Rangers want it? According to Leroux, it's hard to say, but not impossible, because the leaders of New York know very well that it would be huge for Montreal to get their hands on the Quebecer Lafrenière.

They like him a lot, but as a couple good insiders, including Larry Brooks, have mentioned... for the right offer, it's not impossible.

"...they could afford to be greedy. In addition to the 2022 first pick, they could ask for a young prospect and another draft pick. I know it may sound silly, but there is reason to think about it, and believe me, if the Habs wins this lottery, the subject will resurface in May.

Jeff Gorton knows the Rangers organization like the back of his hand. Is Lafrenière vs Wright or Slafkovsky or Geekie worth it? Difficult to answer, but a great Quebec star would certainly be great for the Sainte-Flanelle." - Stephane Leroux
