As we briefly mentioned to you last week, Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens have just lost an important piece of ammunition in an attempt to improve the roster.

As of today, the priority to claim players from waivers is over for the Habs.

From now on, the current season's standings will apply. Therefore, it is the Anaheim Ducks who now have the first right to claim players from waivers. The Montreal Canadiens will now speak in 16th position.

So, if interesting players are placed on waivers today, the CH will no longer have the priority to select them.

As reported by Marco D'Amico of Montreal Hockey Now, the Montreal Canadiens did have the first pick in the waiver wire last spring.

This advantage notably allowed Kent Hughes to get his hands on defenseman Johnathan Kovacevic from the Winnipeg Jets. Among the interesting names that have been made available for free to Kent Hughes in the last few weeks, we can think of Juuso Valimaki (claimed by Arizona) and Kiefer Bellows (claimed by Philadelphia).

Here is the exact wording of the collective agreement

In the event that more than one Club makes a claim for such Player, he shall: (i) be transferred to the claiming Club having earned the lowest percentage of possible points in the League standing at the time of the request for Waivers, or (ii) if Waivers are requested outside the Regular Season, or the successful Waiver claim is made (i.e., the date the Player would be transferred to a successful claiming Club per this Section), before November 1st then the priority shall be determined by the final standing in the League's Regular Season schedule in the preceding Regular Season.»

Good to know!
