Limited to just 23 points, including eight goals in 65 games last year, the 28-year-old forward has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that he can still contribute to a team's success and against all odds, he has been one of the Habs' most reliable forwards this season with six points in nine games.
He was even used on the first line with Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield for a few games. Not bad for a player acquired in return for future considerations.
Monahan has become so useful to Martin St. Louis that some bookers believe he will finish the season with more points than another Kent Hughes acquisition in the summer, Kirby Dach.
At least that's what Pat Laprade of TVA Sports said on "Gages-tu" with Anne-Sophie Bettez:
Currently, Monahan has just one more point than Dach, but unlike Dach, the former Flames forward has already had an 82-point season.
While it's still very early in the season to say which of these two players will get more points, the way Monahan is playing this year is a real gift to Martin St. Louis and it makes you wonder if he's shopping for a new contract with the Habs.
It would be quite a turnaround for Monahan, but we believe it. He deserves a new contract in Montreal.
Let's remember that many experts were saying that he was going to be traded by Kent Hughes at the next trade deadline as soon as he was acquired from the Flames.
The wind is now turning.
What do you think is the right thing to do with Monahan? Trade him at a high price, or keep him?
