While the Habs lost the services of Jesperi Kotkaniemi to an offer sheet, the team received draft picks as compensation, including a first-round pick.

With that first round pick received, Marc Bergevin used it to get his hands on Christian Dvorak of the Arizona Coyotes. The Coyotes will receive the higher of the two picks, unless one of the two picks lands in the top-10. If that happens, the Coyotes will receive the lower first round pick.
At this rate, the Coyotes will receive the Hurricanes' first-round pick, which should have the lower pick, considering the Habs poor season.
In a season like this one, it wouldn't hurt to have two first round picks in reserve, especially if Jeff Gorton starts a rebuild. Marc Bergevin may have made a desperate personnel move by giving a first-round pick to Dvorak.
On the face of it, it wasn't a bad trade, as the Habs was hoping Dvorak would take Phillip Danault's responsibilities. Alas, that was not the case and the Tricolore is in a season of misery.
In hindsight, the Habs should have simply kept their two first round picks by adding two quality prospects to their bank. However, barring a trade, Montreal will only be talking once in the first round on the podium next summer.
