Right now, nothing is going right with the Maple Leafs, and not just on the ice. The team's players in the Queen City are increasingly being criticized for their inconsistent performances, and many analysts have come to wonder if star players like Mitch Marner and Auston Matthews are taking their responsibilities as professional hockey players seriously.
Speaking of Matthews, he has been particularly targeted by a character that is seen much less in the hockey world lately, Don Cherry! Since leaving the Hockey Night in Canada studios, Cherry has continued to share his opinions via the The Don Cherry's Grapevine Podcast, and he used his latest edition to vehemently criticize Auston Matthews' fashion choice.
"It's obvious he had a hard time dressing. $10 million and he can't dress himself?", quipped Cherry.
"You see him now, he's dressed, you can't say he looks silly, but it's like he's going to a barbecue or something and I can't understand it. I can't understand it."
Is Cherry serious? With all the topics he could have talked about, he decided to criticize Matthews' clothing style? Yet, if there is one subject Cherry is not well placed to talk about, it is clothing, he being a big fan of questionable jackets and eccentric suits...
Anyway, I don't think there's a connection between the Leafs' on-ice performance and their dress code, but hey, this isn't the first, nor the last time Don Cherry has made controversial comments! Haha.
