Over the past few days, we've talked a lot about the acquisition of Kirby Dach as a big move by general manager Kent Hughes, but there's another decision in this file that goes unmentioned that is just as major for the Montreal Canadiens.
Dach, 21, is producing at a rate of nearly 70 points (per 82 games) this season while accumulating 17 points in 21 games. The fact that he is only making $3.36 million per year seems to be a big deal for the Habs.
We are talking about a reasonable salary at an important time for the organization, when the salary cap will remain extremely tight for a few seasons, and then it will go up a lot (right when Dach will re-sign)
Towards the end of this pact, it is quite possible that the team will want to be competitive, and this is the kind of salary that will give Kent Hughes the latitude to potentially sign a big name on the free agent market.
