For the past few days, Sean Monahan's name has been in some trade rumours, simply because his contract expires at the end of this season.

One thing is certain, Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton will have a very big decision to make in this matter.

The choice seems simple: re-sign Monahan by March, or trade him by the trade deadline.

Either way, the Montreal Canadiens are in a great position because Monahan is playing very well, so keeping him can only be positive for the next few years, but if he is traded, the return could be very interesting. There is a lot of interest in the trade market.

A first round pick for Monahan?

Some experts are going so far as to say that Kent Hughes would possibly have a 2023 first round pick, on the table, in exchange for Monahan.

As our colleagues at Fanadians report, the other big question is this. How much would it cost the Habs to re-sign Monahan?

Marco D'Amico had his own thoughts on the matter.

According to him, based on the comparisons and the probable overbid, Monahan should get six million dollars and more, and this, for approximately eight years, depending on the offers.

That's a lot of money, but he's still young and deserves it.

"If the Canadiens could get a good return, in exchange for Monahan at the NHL trade deadline, it might be wiser to move on and not tie the team down with another hefty, long-term contract, at least at this point." - Montreal Hockey Now

What would you do if that was your decision?

1- Sign Monahan long term, at six million per season
2- Try to sign Monahan for 3-4 years
3- Trade Monahan for a first round pick
