We've just witnessed a disheartening example of this.
Following serious threats issued by a Hurricanes fan against Florida Panthers players on social media, the police had to step in and escort the team straight from the airport.
One player, in particular, was the focus of these heightened security measures - defender Radko Gudas, who received a personal escort.
See the images of the police rushing to the Florida airport after a threat from a Hurricanes fan:
In one of the troubling posts, the image reveals a tweet with Radko Gudas's personal address and a makeshift bomb, insinuating the individual plans to inflict serious harm on Gudas's family and home.
The thought sends shivers down your spine and is incredibly alarming.
Consequently, these threats were reported to the FBI and the police (rightfully so), who promptly responded and waited to escort the Panthers safely.
Although it appears to have been a vile prank, legal measures seem likely to be taken and the individual behind these threats will be apprehended.
A story worth keeping an eye on.
