Despite finally managing to get through the first playoff round, a first since 2004, the Maple Leafs announced on Friday that general manager Kyle Dubas' contract would not be renewed.
The Leafs' President of Hockey Operations, Brendan Shanahan, will therefore have to find a new GM for his team after five seasons under Dubas' reign.
Assistant General Manager, Brandon Pridham, will thus assume these duties until a new GM is hired.
On this subject, according to information from The Athletic journalist, James Mirtle, Shanahan will enlist the help of NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman in his search for a candidate.
"No matter how the search for the next GM unfolds, the Leafs should hire someone who has NHL experience in this role. It's expected that Shanahan will seek advice from NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and the league office before making the hire, as many teams do in this situation."
Reading between the lines, it would be rather surprising if Shanahan bets on another rookie general manager, like Kyle Dubas was at the beginning of his tenure.
The Maple Leafs are far from the first team to seek Bettman's opinion in finding a new GM.
The Vice President of Hockey Operations for the Canadiens, Jeff Gorton, reportedly used this approach last year before hiring Kent Hughes to replace Marc Bergevin.
