Trade Completed Between the Montreal Canadiens and Blue Jackets Is Taking a Turn for the Better
Let's take a moment to revisit another trade completed by Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens, which is taking a turn for the better.
At the end of last summer, Hughes surprised many by announcing the acquisition of forward
Patrik Laine from the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Trade completed between the Montreal Canadiens and the Columbus Blue Jackets involving Patrik Laine: Kent Hughes is the clear winner
Notably, the very popular page PuckEmpire called this trade "Don Waddell's worst trade" as a general manager.
"I didn't understand Columbus giving up assets to get rid of Laine. They didn't need to do it, regardless of if Laine wanted out. Giving up a second-round pick to get rid of Laine's final two years on his contract when you're a rebuilder like Columbus isn't necessary."

Let's recall that the Canadiens traded defenseman
Jordan Harris in exchange for Patrik Laine and a 2026 second-round pick.
That means this pick is still a fairly valuable asset for Kent Hughes.
Say what you want about Laine, but considering the price paid in the deal, it's another big win for the Canadiens!
While the Columbus Blue Jackets let Jordan Harris go and got nothing in return, Patrik Laine turned out to be a key piece in helping the Canadiens qualify for the 2025 playoffs.
In 52 games this season, he recorded 33 points, including 20 goals, and he certainly played a major role in improving Montreal's power play.
We're very excited to see what the 2025-26 season holds for Laine.
