The name Nikolaj Ehlers has been linked to the Montreal Canadiens for quite some time now.
Let's remember that he's one of Patrik Laine's best friends, that he'll be an unrestricted free agent on July 1, that he can sign with any team he wants, and that he has already shown some openness to signing with the Montreal Canadiens.
However, according to insider Darren Dreger (TSN), Ehlers has just sent a completely different message about his next contract.

Let's just say the message is pretty clear for Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens-and it's likely time to forget about this project if that's what Ehlers is truly looking for.

Ehlers, 29, is a very fast forward standing 6 feet tall and weighing 172 pounds. He was drafted 9th overall by the Winnipeg Jets in 2014 (1st round).
He recorded 63 points in 69 games this season, including 24 goals, after posting 61 points in 82 games last season.
After the recent signings of Matt Duchene (Dallas) and Jonathan Toews (Winnipeg), this could be another solid option slipping away from Kent Hughes as he looks to boost the offense.
