If Kent Hughes' plan to bring in a second-line center for the Canadiens doesn't work out as expected, there might be another option.

That said, it appears a rebuild is being considered in Pittsburgh, and if Malkin were to become available, the Canadiens should take a shot.
At least, that's what Tony Marinaro said during his appearance on JiC on TVA Sports.
He sees Malkin as an excellent Plan B if the Canadiens run out of solutions to find a second center.

Evgeni Malkin Trade to the Montreal Canadiens: Tony Marinaro Opens the Door

Here's exactly what he had to say on the matter:
"He's a big center [...] and even at his age.. Is Kirby Dach better than him?

No.

Is Alex Newhook better than him?

No.

Who is Ivan Demidov's childhood idol?" he asked.

In a perfect world, the Canadiens would like to get a center in his prime, 26-27 years old.

But if Plan A doesn't work, would you say no to Malkin?

Given his age, you can't ask for the moon here.

He'd be a solid Plan B."

- Tony Marinaro
Even though the 38-year-old veteran no longer produces like he did in his prime, his 50 points in 68 games would have made him the Canadiens' fourth-highest scorer in 2024-2025.
