Very strange announcement regarding the NHL waivers: Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens almost saw a new Joel Armia available
We just witnessed a very odd situation concerning the San Jose Sharks and the NHL waivers.
In the last few minutes, renowned insider Frank Seravalli tweeted this:
"Sources say San Jose will place forward Kevin Labanc on waivers today.
Labanc has been sidelined for San Jose's first three games of the year. He is in the final year of his contract at $4.725 million, and he has maintained an average of 0.5 points per game in 432 career games." So, we were about to announce that Kevin Labanc would be on waivers.
It would have been a big surprise to see a player like Labanc on waivers, probably the biggest surprise of the season.
But hold on.
Seravalli has now tweeted this:
"After informing Labanc's camp that he will be placed on waivers today, there's been a twist! Labanc is now expected to play for the Sharks tonight."
Wow! So, Labanc will not be on waivers after all. Clearly, Seravalli's source came from the player's camp.
More to come. A theatrical move by the Sharks.
It's not over, firstly because it indicates that Labanc is clearly available in San Jose, so a trade is possible, and secondly because the Sharks might still decide to place him on waivers soon.
Labanc, 27 years old, racked up 56 points in 82 games in his second full season with the Sharks, and 33 points, including 15 goals, last season.
His waiver situation is reminiscent of that of Joel Armia of the Montreal Canadiens (although he has a much better offensive potential).
