As we have been reporting to you over the last few hours, the Montreal Canadiens organization had to make a big decision with the young goaltender Frederik Dichow today.
According to reports from journalist Guillaume Lefrançois of La Presse, Kent Hughes will not offer a contract to young goalie Dichow before this Thursday's deadline.
Dichow is gone, but what about Vrbetic?
The Canadiens also had to make a big decision about another young goalie, Joe Vrbetic, or at least that's what they all believed.
"The Canadiens also thought they had to make a decision about Vrbetic, drafted in 2021. Since he comes from Canadian junior hockey, everything indicated that the team had two years (therefore until June 1, 2023) to offer him a contract.
But an obscure clause (we spare you the details) in section 8.6 of the collective agreement means that the Canadiens will ultimately retain his rights for four years, until 2025." - La Presse
This is really solid work here from journalist Guillaume Lefrançois.
Basically, Vrbetic is finally treated like a player who evolves in Europe or in the NCAA. It's a complex case, but you only need to remember that the decision is finally postponed to 2025. That's good news.
So Vrbetic will stay with the organization for at least two more seasons.
He will be able to continue helping the Laval Rocket and the Trois-Rivières Lions, and we will see him at the Montreal Canadiens camp in a few months.
