A major trade involving Pavel Datsyuk and Scott Gomez almost happened
Recently, the popular Instagram page "NHL Breakers" posted a very interesting report on major trades that were almost announced.
Among them, one stands out as particularly interesting and surprising.
"In 2007, when the Red Wings and Pavel Datsyuk were in contract disputes and struggling to reach an agreement on a new contract, they offered him to the New Jersey Devils in exchange for Scott Gomez, one for one.
Lou Lamoriello (of the Devils) declined the trade."
Wow! Just imagine if Lamoriello, who was the GM of the New Jersey Devils at the time, had accepted that trade. It could have changed everything.
Datsyuk eventually signed a 7-year contract with the Red Wings a few months later (worth $6.7 million per season).
Before the trade offer:
Datsyuk had just recorded 87 points in 79 games. He was 28 years old.
Gomez had just tallied 60 points in 72 games. He was 26 years old.
After the trade offer, Datsyuk went on to play another decade with the Red Wings, with seasons nearing 100 points.
As for Gomez, he moved on to the New York Rangers and later the Montreal Canadiens in the Ryan McDonagh trade. He had seasons of 16 goals, 16 goals, 12 goals, 7 goals, and 2 goals.
