The name Jonathan Toews is coming up frequently in rumors from some media outlets covering the Montreal Canadiens.

However, the reality is that four finalist teams to sign Toews have already been identified, and the Habs aren't one of them.
We're talking about the Edmonton Oilers, Winnipeg Jets, Toronto Maple Leafs, and.. the Anaheim Ducks!
These teams are reportedly already in the mix.

Good News for Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens

If you ask me, it's already good news that the Canadiens won't be diving into a bidding war to acquire 37 year-old forward Jonathan Toews who hasn't played in quite a while, but that's not all!
"But more recently, and based on much more concrete information, the name of the Anaheim Ducks came out of Elliotte Friedman's mouth." - DLC
It's also great news for the Canadiens to see that the Anaheim Ducks are seriously looking to acquire Toews.
First, because it shows they may not be satisfied with their current center depth (and are looking to make changes), and second, because Toews' arrival in Anaheim would almost certainly open the door for a team like Montreal to potentially pry away a young center like Trevor Zegras or Mason McTavish.
"Indeed, Trevor Zegras and Mason McTavish remain two names frequently mentioned in trade rumors, and by adding a center like Toews, the Ducks could feel more comfortable parting with another. [...]

And that's where the Montreal Canadiens could sneak into the picture."

So yes, Jonathan Toews being acquired by the Anaheim Ducks would be fantastic news for the Montreal Canadiens, it could lead to a strong acquisition of their own and allow them to take advantage of the situation.
One to watch!
Toews, 37, recorded 31 points in 53 games with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2022-23, his most recent season, and 37 points in 71 games in 2021-22.
