In the first incident, Matthews was injured on Thursday in Florida when Carter Verhaeghe's attempted dump-in struck him in a sensitive spot.

In the game against the Hurricanes, Matthews faced another hit when Jesper Fast's skate connected directly with his groin after a faceoff.
Although Matthews instantly fell and stayed on the ice briefly, he managed to keep playing in the game.
