Development: a $10 million contract for Samuel Montembeault?
We discussed earlier this week the upcoming contract for Rafaël Harvey-Pinard, but experts have also weighed in on the future deal for goaltender Samuel Montembeault, who is truly impressing this season.
He is not currently earning much money, but he is really helping the CH and seems to be showing signs of potential as a number one NHL goaltender.
Kent Hughes will have the opportunity to extend Montembeault's contract soon, but know that his contract worth 1 million dollars per season is still valid until 2024.
$10 million over four seasons for Montembeault?
Expert Philippe Boucher indeed mentioned that he would not hesitate to give him $10 million over four seasons, which is $2.5 million per year.
It's an interesting gamble because if Samuel Montembeault becomes a number 1 goaltender, a contract of $2.5 million per season would be a real steal.
If he becomes a solid "1B" goaltender, or one of the very good number 2 goaltenders in the NHL, again, it could be a very interesting contract for the CH.
"Before looking elsewhere, I would put my energy on Montembeault (...) a small sentimental offer, you like playing in Montreal, a little $10 million for four years, if I were Kent Hughes, I would try it."
"He continues to improve from game to game, from week to week, we can think that maybe we have a number one in the making."
Philippe Boucher
