In the last few minutes, we have just learned that a small miracle has occurred on the Washington side.
First of all, let's remember what we mentioned at the end of last week:
On December 23, against the Winnipeg Jets, Washington Capitals defenseman John Carlson got quite a scare.
He was unfortunately hit directly in the head by a powerful shot recorded at over 90 miles per hour.
He truly lived the nightmare of all hockey players.
In a recent touching interview, Carlson confirmed that his ear did indeed have to be reattached to his head.
He also suffered a skull fracture, a severed temporal artery and a severed ear.
"I was just struck by lightning. That's the only way to describe it. The pain was unbearable, I thought I wasn't going to make it."
- John Carlson
Anyway, after this extremely traumatic episode, which could have been fatal for Carlson and certainly could have ended his career, now we just got some incredible news.
Carlson is back this morning alongside Alex Ovechkin on his team's first power play:
"Carlson is working on the first PP unit with Ovechkin, Oshie, Backstrom, Strome."
So he'll be back in the game as early as tonight against the Chicago Blackhawks! What a story worthy of a Hollywood movie. It will be really interesting to watch and we are so happy for him.
Alex Ovechkin and his team are back with their best defenseman.
According to Washington reporters, it's a miracle that Carlson can return to the game at all this season.
"Exactly three months after a 90MPH hit to the face fractured his skull and severed his temporal artery, John Carlson is making his return to the Capitals' lineup.
He is expected to play Thursday against Chicago." - Sammi Silber
