For the past few days, one of the hot topics in the hockey world is the abolition of fighting in the QMJHL.
As you know and as we recently reported, the captain of the Montreal Canadiens, Nick Suzuki, has taken a stand in favor of fighting, which has generated some criticism.
He is therefore "against" their abolition.
In the last few hours and as reported by the TVA network, Patrick Roy, head coach and GM of the Quebec Remparts, expressed a different opinion during an interview with Jean-Charles Lajoie.
According to him, hockey must focus on speed and execution, rather than on fighting.
He even says that Suzuki, as a young player, needs to mature to realize this:
"I think for the image of our sport, we're going to grow up by taking away the fights. Hockey needs to be a sport about speed and execution.
Suzuki is a young guy. He will mature with time and will see things in a different way. When I was 25 or 26, I saw things in a certain way too.
At 57, I don't think that way anymore. I don't think we're going to be laughed at. I think we've just created something that may bother some people, but I see it in a good light. You have to move forward in life. It's a change that will benefit our sport in the long run."
- Patrick Roy
You can guess that, considering his past, this is a statement that has fans reacting immensely.
In this big discussion, Roy has clearly taken a stand and he obviously thinks that sports should get away from fighting. That's an interesting opinion coming from someone who knows very well what he's talking about.
Do you think the NHL should abolish them too? Do you agree with Roy?
