New worrying statement concerning Matvei Michkov for the Montreal Canadiens fans
Monday, TVA Sports journalist Anthony Martineau dropped an article that created quite a stir. He had indeed met with Matvei Michkov's current assistant coach, who asserted that the young forward won't be held back by his KHL team at the end of the 2025-2026 season.
Martineau also met Dmitri Zavgorodniy, a teammate of the Russian prodigy with HC Sochi, who also previously played in the QMJHL, with the Rimouski Oceanic. Zavgorodniy stated that Michkov is the perfect player for the Canadiens:
"Matvei is like the people of Montreal: he's passionate about hockey! He's one of your own! Michkov and Montreal, it sounds like a 'perfect match' to me!" - Dmitri Zavgorodniy
As if that wasn't enough, the TVA Sports journalist followed up in the evening. He posted a never-before-seen video on his Twitter account showing the young Russian sensation in training. See how he is a magician, much like Alex Kovalev was, with the puck!
Canadiens' fans were now all won over!
But Tuesday evening, it was Mathias Brunet's turn to give them a cold shower, with rather worrying information.
Indeed, the La Presse journalist mentioned during his daily column on BPM Sports, that the young man's entourage is not the healthiest. So much so that Brunet is starting to lose hope, not because of his abilities on the ice, but because of everything that is happening off of it.
"There was a particular dynamic with the dad who had a lot of influence. Will his unfortunate death change the dynamic? Apparently, it wasn't easy over there." - Mathias Brunet
"The boy's entourage controlled his environment, his team, the lines, the drills... It was unhealthy. I don't know what has changed now, but he has his character."
Brunet, however, is confident of Michkov's success in the NHL. However, it remains to be seen whether he can positively contribute to a team's success.
"I have no doubt that he will be an excellent player in the NHL, that he will score points!"
We remember that the Canadiens have had their fair share of players whose entourage was controlling. Just think of Alex Galchenyuk, whose father was constantly giving him advice. We saw how it all ended for the Canadiens' 3rd overall pick in the 2012 NHL Draft.
