We had two extremely important results for the Montreal Canadiens last night.

Patrick Roy's New York Islanders lost to the Edmonton Oilers, and the Detroit Red Wings fell (by a score of 4-2) to the Carolina Hurricanes.
Yes, this is huge for the Montreal Canadiens.
As for Patrick Roy's squad, this defeat practically confirms that they are no longer in the race for a playoff spot.
One less competitor for the Habs.
As for the Detroit Red Wings, their loss gives Montreal a real opportunity tonight to leave them far behind in the rearview mirror.
Following this great night for the Canadiens in the standings, the race is increasingly becoming a three-team battle.

The Montreal Canadiens continue climbing in the standings, thanks to losses by the Red Wings and Patrick Roy's Islanders

Here's the current picture:
As of today and at the time of writing:
The Columbus Blue Jackets have 70 points in 65 games (in the playoffs)
The New York Rangers have 70 points in 66 games (out of the playoffs)
The Montreal Canadiens have 69 points in 65 games (out of the playoffs)
The Detroit Red Wings have 68 points in 66 games (out of the playoffs)
Martin St-Louis' squad is positioning itself better and better, but they need a win tonight at home, no less!
