In the past few hours, the National Hockey League announced the winner of the prestigious Selke Trophy, awarded to the league's best defensive forward.

Unsurprisingly, it was Florida Panthers center Aleksander Barkov who once again claimed the individual honor.
By the way, Barkov absolutely deserves this trophy, that's not the issue at all.

Nick Suzuki is clearly being underrated by NHL experts

The problem, at least in my humble opinion, lies in the full voting results released by the NHL.
It's truly strange to see that Suzuki only received a single second-place vote, and just a few third-place votes (likely from Quebec journalists, by the way).
Why?
"Montreal Canadiens' Nick Suzuki received a 2nd place and a couple of 3rd place votes in Selke voting and finished 13th overall.

But the winner was never in doubt; Sasha Barkov with 96 first place votes."
- Marco D'Amico

I don't understand how Nick Suzuki could be considered only the 13th-best defensive forward in the NHL by these so-called experts.
I don't get how he ended up behind names like Jordan Staal, Adam Lowry, and Jack Eichel.
It's bizarre.. Especially considering Suzuki finished the 2024-2025 season with a positive plus-minus of +19 (!) while constantly facing top opponents, logging heavy minutes, and playing on a technically rebuilding team in front of an inexperienced defensive core. He also finished the season with 89 points!
Anyway, that's the final verdict for Suzuki.
He actually received fewer votes than last year, which is completely incomprehensible.
No, things aren't looking good for those hoping the Selke Trophy will be returning to Montreal anytime soon.
