Hughes and the Canadiens Were One Evening Away From Receiving a Huge Gift and Making a Major Addition

There's been a lot of action in the National Hockey League and with the Montreal Canadiens over the past few days.
Of course, there was the team's playoff run, which ended in five games against the Washington Capitals, and there was also the NHL Draft Lottery earlier this week.
This article covers both topics at once.
Let me start by being very clear.
Personally, I absolutely wouldn't trade the Canadiens' playoff experience, even if it was short, for a fourth overall pick.
I much prefer what we got to experience in the playoffs.
That said, the fact remains: the Canadiens came very close to receiving huge news on Monday during the 2025 lottery.
Kent Hughes was one evening away from receiving a massive gift and making a major addition at the draft
As the headline states, the Canadiens were indeed just one evening away from landing the fourth overall pick in the 2025 draft!
Utah HC, who won the second lottery and thus secured the 4th overall pick in the 2025 draft, finished just two points behind the Canadiens in the standings. Wow.
That means with just one fewer win, just two fewer points, the Habs would have landed that 4th overall pick.
But of course, they also would've missed the playoffs.
That's an interesting fact.
The Canadiens were one loss away from receiving a huge gift and making a major addition by landing one of Matthew Schaefer, Michael Misa, James Hagens, Caleb Desnoyers, or Porter Martone.
That said, I'll repeat that I prefer having gone through the playoff experience and now holding the 17th overall pick (even if the 4th pick would have been massive to complete the rebuild).
