Canadiens place multiple players on LTIR to absorb Phillip Danault's contract

The general manager of the Montreal Canadiens, Kent Hughes, made sure all the details were addressed following the acquisition of Phillip Danault.
The question was therefore inevitable. How could the club absorb Danault's contract without making another immediate move?
Kirby Dach and Kaiden Guhle have been placed on the long-term injured reserve list

It should be noted, however, that LTIR can be applied retroactively.
This maneuver gives the club temporary flexibility, but let's just say it doesn't sound very encouraging for those hoping to see Dach or Guhle return to action soon, especially since Kent Hughes also mentioned that a return to play is not imminent for Kirby Dach.
Dach, 24, carries an annual salary of $3.36 million. Guhle, 23, counts for $5.55 million against the cap. Together, they free up enough space to integrate Danault without forcing another immediate transaction.
Danault, 32, arrives in Montreal with an annual salary of $5.5 million. Last season, he played 80 games, recording 8 goals and 35 assists for 43 points.
In his career he has won 53.1% of his faceoffs, which is a key element and certainly had an impact on Kent Hughes' decision to acquire him.
The most important part of Hughes' remarks lies elsewhere. The GM did not want to shoot himself in the foot in the long term. By not moving out a player in the transaction, he keeps several options open.
When Dach or Guhle returns, a roster move will have to be announced. A recall, a trade, or another adjustment, the door remains open. Hughes confirmed it without hesitation.
The key element is that the plan was clear from the start. Acquiring Danault for a pick, without unbalancing the salary cap, was part of the original scenario.
Mission accomplished, for now. We will be keeping a close eye on this for you.
