The Avalanche were crowned Stanley Cup champions for the first time in 21 years on Sunday after a 2-1 win over the Lightning in Tampa Bay.
The Cup came back to Colorado with the rest of the team, but then it kind of got lost. The trophy made an unscheduled stop Monday night when it was brought to the Denver home of Dmitri Rudenko and her husband Kit Karbler. The delivery was destined for their neighbor, Colorado Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog, who lives in the same neighborhood and whose address is very similar to Rudenko and Karbler's.
"I was the first one to see the car parked in our driveway and it backed up. The person opened the suitcase and I spotted the trunk. I recognized it right away because I had watched the finals games. Jokingly, I asked if it was the Stanley Cup and the man said 'yes'!"
"He opened it up completely [the Cup keeper], said go ahead. I lifted it up. I couldn't believe how heavy it was. I ran my fingers over the engraving." - Kit Karbler
The couple took a quick photo of the trophy in its case before they headed to the Avalanche captain's house.
"We made sure it would arrive safely." - Dmitri Rudenko
After a quick detour to Rudenko and Karbler's home, the Stanley Cup made its way back to captain Gabriel Landeskog's home in time for the championship parade, which took place on the streets of Denver on Thursday.
