While most observers expected three more key players to leave the Tampa Bay Lightning this summer due to the NHL salary cap, GM Julien BriseBois has just surprised us.
According to the excellent Darren Dreger (TSN), BriseBois has just surprised many and he finally managed to reach an agreement with forward
Nick Paul.
"Sources say Nick Paul and the Tampa Bay Lightning are close to announcing a long-term contract. There are still details to be worked out, but Paul's extension was a priority today." - Darren Dreger
Recall what reporter Kevin Allen said just a few days ago:
"The Lightning absolutely do not have the money to sign
Ondrej Palat, Nick Paul or
Jan Rutta right now." - Kevin Allen
It sure looks like the Lightning GM just pulled (another) rabbit out of his hat. While most pundits expected to see Paul, Palat and Rutta leave Tampa, here's one already signed. (Even if they really don't have any room on the roster)
In fact, not only do they have no room under the salary cap, but they are already in the negative for next year (without Paul's contract), and here they are adding more.
It's an announcement that surprises many, but great news for Lightning fans. More details will follow!
