In the last few minutes, we learned some extremely sad news as the Toronto Maple Leafs issued an official statement announcing the passing of legendary defenseman Börje Salming.
Salming had Lou Gehrig's disease, a degenerative condition that attacks the upper motor neurons. Salming, 71, played in 1148 NHL games, mostly with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The entire hockey world is in mourning, and we are deeply touched and saddened by this announcement.
In fact, the Montreal Canadiens organization has just shown great class by publishing the following press release:
"The Canadiens are saddened to learn of the passing of Börje Salming and wish to extend our sympathies to his family as well as the Maple Leafs organization.
He was an exceptional player and a great human being, and he will always be remembered." - Montreal Canadiens
This is really well said. Chantal Machabée added to it:
Our thoughts are with Salming's family and friends.
