We have just learned that the Montreal Canadiens have reached an agreement with goaltender Samuel Montembeault on a two-year, one-way contract extension (2022-23 to 2023-24).
It's a really interesting contract, because of the two years, but especially because of the one way contract! It means that the organization really considers him as a Montreal Canadiens goalie (and not as a Laval Rocket goalie) and this is well deserved for the young Quebec goalie.
With Carey Price and Jake Allen still under contract, this is a very intriguing deal for Montembault and it may be the start of something else. (Allen trade? Bad news for Carey?) This will be something to watch closely!
Here's the official announcement:
Montreal Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes announced on Monday that the team has agreed to terms on a two-year, one-way contract extension (2022-23 to 2023-24) with goaltender Samuel Montembeault.
Montembeault, 25, compiled an 8-18-6 record in 38 games with the Canadiens last season, along with a 3.77 goals-against average and a .891 save percentage. The Bécancour, QC native earned his first NHL shutout on February 24 against the Buffalo Sabres.
Claimed off waivers by the Canadiens on October 2, 2021, the 6-foot-3, 199-pound netminder will be in his sixth season as a professional. Montembeault has earned 17 wins in 63 career NHL games.
