In the last few minutes on TVA Sports, former Montreal Canadiens head coach Michel Therrien made a major revelation about star forward Steven Stamkos.

Stamkos and the Montreal Canadiens
Therrien did reveal that the Habs, led by Marc Bergevin, made a serious attempt to bring Steven Stamkos to Montreal.
They launched a big "charm operation", as Stamkos was going to become an uncompensated free agent player. (in 2016)
"Marc Bergevin, Geoff Molson and I had met with Steven Stamkos at the offices of his agent Don Meehan to show our interest.

We had all spoken up. As much the general manager, as the owner and finally me the coach."

As you know, the CH leaders had really hoped to sign Stamkos, but finally, on June 29, 2016, he signed an 8-season contract ($8.5 million per year) with the Tampa Bay Lightning.
"We learned a few hours later that Steven Stamkos had made the decision to extend his career in Tampa Bay."

- Michel Therrien, via TVA Sports

Ironically, Stamkos signed with Tampa Bay on the exact same day that the Montreal Canadiens famously traded PK Subban to the Nashville Preds for Shea Weber.
See what Therrien had to say:
"Geoff Molson had addressed the business aspect. Marc Bergevin, on the other hand, had talked about the structure of our team and where we were going as a group and I remember saying, "it's all well and good business, but this is the coach talking"

"I had made the case to Stamkos about what I wanted from him and how I wanted to use him, the role I wanted to give him."

- Michel Therrien

The latter also added that he had every intention of using Stamkos in a scoring and leadership role.
Really interesting.
Stamkos, 32, has a very solid 57 points, including 24 goals, in 48 games this season (106 points last season). He has 505 goals, and 1029 points, in 970 career NHL games. What a player!
