During a very interesting recent interview with Kent Hughes on TVA Sports, the general manager of the Canadiens agreed to comment on numerous files and address certain rumors.
There was one in particular that was circulating at the beginning of the season.
It was widely discussed at the start of the season, and informants even suggested that the Edmonton Oilers were very interested.
In short, here is what Kent Hughes had to say on the subject:
With a new contract in hand, Montembeault has unofficially earned the number one goalie spot in the organization. While the option to trade him was considered in the past, it's no longer on the table.
"It's not our plan. Of course, it was part of the discussions, as he was approaching free agency. If we wanted to trade Sam, we wouldn't have signed him, because goalies are easier to trade without a contract. If Sam continues to play this way, he'll get another contract coming his way that will pay him even more," said Hughes on TVA Sports.
He thus confirms that Samuel was indeed part of the trade discussions at the beginning of the campaign, but it's now a settled issue.
It's no longer the plan (fortunately) to trade Montembeault, and we can expect to see him in front of the Montreal Canadiens' net for a long time to come.
This is obviously great news. Lucky we didn't trade him!
Montembeault, 27 years old and from Bécancour, has a record of 9-6-4 this season, a goals-against average of 2.89 per game, and a save percentage of 0.909.
Because of him, the Canadiens probably have quite a few more points in the standings than expected. He's fantastic this season.
In his career, he has a record of 42-51-16, an average of 3.38, and a save percentage of 0.898.
