Recently, Jeff Gorton, Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations for the Montreal Canadiens, who is also General Manager Kent Hughes' right-hand man, was interviewed on the Bob McCown podcast and made some interesting statements.
He mentioned that he would like to add "a few more elements", so we can anticipate a few more Habs acquisitions between now and the beginning of the 2022-23 season.
Also, Gorton took the opportunity to give an "update" on the vision of the Habs, in relation to the current rebuilding process of the club.
Good news! Like us, Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton realize that the rebuild will obviously take much less time than originally anticipated. We were hoping for a quick rebuild (like the Rangers) and well, Gorton told Bob McCown's podcast that he believes the Montreal Canadiens are already in a very comfortable position. (in its reconstruction)
Unlike organizations like the Chicago Blackhawks, we already have a lot of pieces in place to hopefully be competitive in two or three seasons.
One major signing could change everything. As Gorton himself illustrates, the Rangers rebuild ended with the signing of
Artemi Panarin.
Could the Habs rebuild end with the signing of
Jonathan Huberdeau? You be the judge, but it's certainly an interesting prospect.
One thing is for sure, as Gorton mentions, we can be comfortable with the position the Montreal Canadiens organization is in right now, with respect to the rebuild.
There are some solid young players already in place (and some very promising ones):
If Gorton and Hughes manage to acquire a Jonathan Huberdeau or a
Pierre-Luc Dubois, plus a high first round draft pick in 2023, wow!
